The ViewGlasgow Review
The 78 only serves vegan food, they have a fantastic selection of rare beers and the atmosphere is the most chilled you'll find for many miles around.
The Venue
The 78 is set over a brick room filled with wooden furniture. The place looks more like a student hall than a pub and the same can be said about the atmosphere. There are a couple of couches, tall stools, a fireplace and a number of things that seem stolen from your granny’s house. There's old lampshades, a gramophone, 78rpm records - hence the name - and more. Overall, the place looks laidback and welcoming.
The People
The crowd that come here to chill out are all in their twenties. The 78 appeals in particular to the alternative type, those who relish the all vegan menu and want to listen to a live act or two. The 78 is comfy and relaxed so there's no attitude.
The Food
The menu is a real treat for vegans. With starters (£3.50 to £4) like toasted pecan and basil cream on sun-dried tomato salad and Thai spiced potato cakes with chilli dipping sauce you have nothing to complain about, especially since the food is fresh, skillfully prepared and full of flavour. The mains (£7.50) include crispy falafel platter, smoky coconut and bean chilli wrap, homemade vegetable haggis and more, while the desserts (£3.50 and £4) are a naughty treat for anyone, with options like crispy banana parcels with rum sauce and vanilla ice cream. If ever there’s a place to convert a carnivore, this may be it.
The Drink
Even if you're not planning on having a meal, The 78 is still a great destination, especially if you like cider. They sell all the most common ones and also rarities like Normandy cider, great tasting but expensive at a staggering £6. The beer selection is good but also somewhat expensive and bottles are all above £3 but here you can sample Cannabis beer, Freedom Ale, Angel Organic, Furstenberg, Redstripe, Vin Roots Lager, Riedenburger and even cool soft drinks like Duchy’s Original Golden Presse. The choice of unusual beers is truly wide at The 78. They also stock the whole Samuel Smith range and the wheat and extra dark stout come highly recommended.
The Last Word
The 78 is a great place for a lazy afternoon or a quiet evening with friends.
