The ViewGlasgow Review
Cafezique has branched out from the deli next door and is a treasure box of well taken care of ingredients.
The Venue
This gourmet cafe is just as small as the deli shop. There are just a few square tables, a wooden bench, tall stools by the bar and a mezzanine to add a few extra seats to this nice but cramped venue.
The cafe is set into what once was Hargan’s Dairy and it has maintained some old elements, while adding some new ones. There is the original wooden floor and stone walls, but also the modern lines of the bar.
The People
Cafezique has a rather casual atmosphere. It's certainly not a restaurant and it retains all the informality of a cafe. However, it is rather expensive to eat here and this factor influences the type of crowd coming in. You'll see family groups, couples and small groups of friends, all rather well-heeled and accustomed to quality food.
The Food
The food is the real strength of Cafezique which is no surprise since the deli has been selling great food to go for some time and the cafe mirrors their ability in choosing, cooking and presenting interesting ingredients.
There aren't many dishes on offer but this means they take good care of each one. Try the sea trout with buttered Jersey royals, green beans and wilted sea kale (£16), scallops with celeriac mash and roasted fennel herb salad (£14), crab linguini (£12.50), smoked mackerel and beetroot pate (£8.50), cullen skink, Moroccan tangine and more.
You can also order breakfast (£2.50 to £7.50 with peaks at £9.50). To start the day with something differentorder the Jeanie’s breakfast which includes pata negra ham, cheese of the day, medijol dates and Delizique bread.
The Drink
Cafe/delis don't often sell alcohol but Cafezique has an alcohol licence and wine is popular. You can choose from a range of bottles priced at £14 to £20 with small and large glasses also available.
Draught beers cost £2.90 while bottled beers are £2.90 to £3.80. Rarer bottles like Estrella Dam, Moretti, Dos Equis, Carib, Samuel Smith Old Lager and others are all on offer. Other interesting options are Sheppey Dry Organic Cider (£3.40) and a range of fortified wines including Tawny Port and Riesling. You can also choose from long list of spirits (£2.90) to fortify your coffee or to drink neat.
The Last Word
Cafezique is worth a stop, especially if you want to have some lunch. The food is at times surprising and always tastes great thanks to fresh quality ingredients. The only drawbacks are the rather steep prices and the very cramped space.
